Making the "Ask" For Relay Sponsorship

There are many factors that will contribute to your Relay’s success when approaching a potential sponsor. The first is finding the right person to make the ask! When looking for a committee member to ask local businesses for participation in your event’s sponsorship program, identify a volunteer who:
  • Has good contacts
  • Is willing to make the call
  • Understands your program

  • This person should be:
    • Enthusiastic
    • Willing to ask for money

    • Knowing how to tell your story contributes to your success when requesting sponsorship. Here are a few things to keep in mind when asking potential sponsors for their support:
      • Share your personal story or your experience with cancer in a passionate way
      • Be persuasive, but not pushy
      • Be knowledgeable about the American Cancer Society and how it benefits your community

      • Make sure that your potential sponsor understands the benefits and recognition opportunities including promotion on banners at the event as well as on the event programs and T-shirts.

There are several support materials online to help you with your event including the Team Captain Learning Modules and the Fundraising Development Guidebook.

Good luck in planning and executing your event and thank you for all you do to support the American Cancer Society's mission to create a world with Less Cancer and More Birthdays!!
